The 18th Annual Citywide Clean
Sweep and Eco-Fair celebrated Earth
Day in Romulus and helped welcome
warmerweather, officials said.
The 18th Annual Citywide Clean
Sweep,created by Mayor LeRoy D.
Burcroff in 1999 while he was serving on
the city council as a way to encourage
residents to take pride and ownership in
their city, drew a crowd this year, The
event, co-sponsored by Waste
Management, was attended bymore than
50 volunteers, including city officials,
civic groups, students and families, who
came out to clean up around the commu-
nity and enjoy fellowship.
Officials said special thanks were due
to Romulus Boy Scout Troop 872, St.
John's Lodge No. 44 and St. Luke
Chapter No. 2 Order of the Eyes,
Romulus Beautification Committee,
Romulus High School teacher and foot-
ball coach Thom Patterson and his stu-
dents, Barth Elementary teacher Tom
Gibb-Randall and his students, and the
many other individuals and volunteers
who attended andworked.
The Eco-Fair took place at the
Romulus Athletic Center where 10 local
organizations were available to distrib-
ute environmental information and
speak with residents. Participants
included Waste Management, Huron-
Clinton Metroparks, MSU Extension
Office, DTE Residential Energy
Efficiency Program, Alliance of
Downriver Watersheds, Alliance of
Rouge Communities, Romulus Public
Library, Romulus Garden Club, Old City
Acres Farm, and Wayne County Health
Department, officials said in a prepared
statement.
For more information about the
events or suggestions for future Earth
Day programming, call Burcroff's office,
(734) 942-7571.
Diane Kullis, the current
federal and state grant coordi-
nator for the Van Buren Public
Schools, has been named as the
interim superintendent of
schools.
Members of the board of
education
unanimously
approved the promotion during
a special meeting April 28 and
Kullis' will assume her new title
onMay 12, the day following the
official resignation of Interim
Super intendent /Human
Resources Director Shonta
Langford-Green.
Board members said they
hope to have a permanent new
superintendent in place by July
1.
Kullis, who was formerly the
director of instruction, has
been with the district since
2011. She had planned to retire
last year but stayed to train a
replacement for her job at the
request of former Superinten-
dent of Schools Michael Van
Tassel.
Kullis has earned degrees
including a bachelor of arts in
special education, deaf/hard of
hearing; master of arts in
instructional development and
technology; master of arts in
educational leadership, with
elementary principal and cen-
tral office certification; director
of special education certifica-
tion; specialist of arts - educa-
tional leadership; and a State of
Michigan school administrator
certificate. Like Green, she will
be paid an additional $100 per
day in the interimcapacity.
When voters in Romulus
choose a new president this fall,
many of them will do it at a new
polling location.
Voters in Precinct 5 will vote
in the Romulus Senior Center,
not at Romulus City Hall.
Members of the city council voted
tomove the precinct there during
their regularmeeting last week.
Romulus Clerk Ellen Craig-
Bragg said the move was neces-
sary because the senior center
has more available handicapped
parking andmore space.
“It's larger, there's more space
and it'll be more comfortable for
people, getting in and out,” she
said.
She said she had wanted to
move the polling location to a
new site for several years and the
need became even more evident
during the recent presidential
primary. The 35 percent voter
turnout in that election made city
hall a very busy place.
“It was pretty congested,” she
said.
Also, the city hall parking lot
does not have enough handi-
capped parking space to be ADA
compliant as a polling place, she
said. With only one precinct
worker, it's difficult to set the
room up for voting between the
Monday night city council meet-
ings and Tuesday morning poll
opening.
“It's a very busy precinct. This
is going to make it more conven-
ient for voters and it'll make it
more convenient for the staff at
city hall who are working,” she
said. “There are a lot of interrup-
tions that go on when you have a
large number of people going in
and out.”
Voters will be notified through
new voter registration cards, a
notice from city hall explaining
the change. It will also be on the
city website and in the city
newsletter.
The funding for that has
already beenbudgeted.
Council President John
Barden said the move would also
help reduce some congestion in
the parking lot, which also serves
theRomulus PublicLibrary.
“It's a good move, I think,” he
said.
Mayor LeroyBurcroff agreed.
“We can control the activities
and functions at the senior cen-
ter, we can't (at city hall).
Essential services have to go on,”
he said. “It'll bemuch less disrup-
tive. We can scale back on what
we schedule there so we just
focus on having a smooth elec-
tion. I think ultimately it'll be a
better experience for the voters
and theworkers.”
