In an email to all parents, Behnke said,
“The book is taught as part of a larger unit of
Courage in Life and Literature and is one of
two books that students can choose for this
unit. The title of the other option is Children
ofWillesdenLane.”
Behnke's communication offered parents
the option of reviewing the text in question
or changing the book their child is reading to
the other option.
He noted that the district is currently in
the process of reviewing the concern brought
forward regarding the Anne Frank book and
promised parents a written response regard-
ing the outcome of that process.
The Anne Frank book is not used inmany
districts, according to Amazon.com, as it is
considered too depressing for middle school
students by some educators.
Anne Frank died in March 1945 in the
concentration camp of Bergen-Belsen and
became the most famous victim of the
Holocaust through her diary. She wrote the
diary duringWorldWar II while she was hid-
ing from the Nazi movement with her family
inAmsterdam.
A Canton Township resident will face a
preliminary court examination next
Thursday on charges he planned a series or
robberies in the area.
Clifton Jermaine Whatley, 35, now sus-
pended from his duties as a Detroit police
officer, faces the charges in 23rd District
Court in Taylor. At his arraignment, bond
was set at $1million cash, which he has not
posted.
Whatley served as a Detroit police officer
formore than 10 years. He now faces charges
of three counts of armed robbery, two counts
of bank robbery, one count of conducting a
criminal enterprise, four counts of unlawful
imprisonment and one count of felony
firearm. Prosecutors allege that Whatley
organized robberies throughout the area
from May 2012 until March 2013 in Canton,
Westland, Taylor, Harper Woods and
Melvindale.
In a prepared statement, Wayne County
P r o s e c u t o r
Kym Worthy
said, “It is
alleged that
Clifton Whatley
has robbed vic-
tims in five of
our
Wayne
county commu-
nities. We will
vigorously pres-
ent our case in
court.”
Among the
crimes investi-
gators allege that Whatley orchestrated was
the robbery of the Canton Family Dollar
store on JoyRoadnear I-275.
Whatley was arrested following charges
against Raymond Maurice Whatley, 19, and
Eric Anthony Reed, 21, who were charged
with several robberies including the Canton
Family dollar store and conspiracy to rob a
Westland Cash Advance store on Merriman
Road, along with several other crimes.. The
younger Whatley is a relative of the former
police officer. Reed also faces charges of sec-
ond degree criminal sexual conduct after he
allegedly fondled a clerk during the Canton
robbery. The pair also allegedly took cell
phone from employees along with money
fromthe store.
They, too, both remain jailed rather than
provide the $500,000 cashbonds.
The Canton Lions Club is planning a
membership drive beginning at 6 p.m. May 16
at PalermoPizzeria andRestaurant.
The club has a diversemembership and is
dedicated to working throughout the commu-
nity to improve life for those with sight or
hearing impairments. Fundraising events of
the club include euchre tournaments, pan-
cake breakfast at Liberty Fest, corn roast in
August and working at various locations col-
lectingmoney forWhite CaneWeek or selling
Candy Canes during theChristmas holidays

Northville Township officials received a
nasty surprise recently and will cost taxpay-
ers nearly $300,000.
Testing at the powerhouse located on the
site of the former Northville Psychiatric
Hospital revealed massive amounts of
asbestos, a known carcinogen. The amounts
found during testing last fall were far in
excess of the estimates by the contractors,
National Environmental Group. Asbestos,
according to Public Services Director Tom
Casari, asbestos was found in the brickwork
of the boiler units inside the structure.
National estimated the cost of the
increasedmediation at $288,000.
The asbestos mediation is necessary,
according to Township Supervisor Robert
Nix, as a condition of other qualifying for
other grants to help clean up the 330-acres of
property now owned by the township. In
addition to the asbestos abatement at the
powerhouse building, several other build-
ings and facilities will be demolished, some
of which may also need asbestos or haz-
ardous material abatement, the under-
ground steam tunnel networkmust be closed
and a portion removed and general site
preparation and infrastructure improved
and constructed.
There is also an old medical waste incin-
erator on the property which will be demol-
ished.
Township trustees approved the change
order in the amount of $300,000.
They cut scrap paper, dust library shelves,
water plants and re-shelve books. In fact,
there aren't too many tasks volunteers don't
take on to make the Canton Public Library
the popular spot it is. In 2012, 17 of the volun-
teers at the library contributed more than
2,700 hours of service, earning the
President's Volunteer Service Award from
the President's Council on Service and Civic
Participation.
Canton Public Library Board of Trustees
President Kim Schulz presented the awards
to the 17 individuals along with a certificate
of the honor, a letter signed by President
Barack Obama and a service star based on
the number of hours earned. Shirley
Reynolds earned the gold service star;
Terry Deisler, Ilene Saunders and Maha
Zahid each earned the silver service star;
Lisa Kluka, Tammy Farley, Sandra Walczak,
Carolyn Sumner, Barb Backes, Mary Watts,
Diane Miner, Cindi Fry, Quinn Ebner,
Morgan Benjamin, Delores Wilson, Amy
Dazio andGene Scharf were each awarded a
bronze service star for their volunteer work
at the township library.
“We truly appreciate all the help we
receive from our service volunteers and the
dedication they show to the library. The
award is a representation of each volunteer's
commitment to civic participation and also a
way of showing how thankful we are for
everything they do. We're very happy to rec-
ognize the volunteers in a special way,” said
Schulz.
The President's Council on Service and
Civic Participation was established in 2003
and since then has been recognizing the
valuable contributions volunteers are mak-
ing in communities. The President's
Volunteer Service Award programwas creat-
ed by the council as a way to thank and
honor Americans who, by their demonstrat-
ed commitment and example, inspire others
to participate in volunteer service, a library
spokespersonnoted.
