ESTLAND
Westland names 2014 Police Officer of the Year
Romulus library offers special events for month of May
Cale Furney has been named the
Westland Police Department Officer of the
Year for 2014.
Furney, a two-year veteran of the
department was recognized for his keen
skills and observations that led to numer-
ous arrests and convictions, according to
Mayor William Wild who officially
announced the awardMarch 20.
A graduate of Grand Valley State
University with a bachelor's degree in
criminal justice, Furney previously
worked for the Hamtramck Police
Department. In 2014, Furney apprehend-
ed two individuals who robbed the
Merriman Road Taco Bell in Westland,
recovering the weapon used in the rob-
bery. Both the accused were sentenced to
prison terms in the incident. He also
arrested a parole absconder and recov-
ered a vehicle this parolee had stolen.
That offender was also successfully prose-
cuted and sentenced to prison.
Furney was also instrumental in the
arrest of two individuals who broke into
Leon's Family Diner and numerous other
Wayne Road businesses. Both were appre-
hended and convicted for their crimes.
“Officer Furney displays the finest tra-
ditions of the Westland Police
Department,” commented Police Chief
Jeff Jedrusik. “I am proud to recognize
Cale Furney as the 2014 Westland Police
Officer of theYear.”
Wild further acknowledged Furney's
contributions.
“A safe community is among the most
important qualities one seeks when choos-
ing where to live or where to locate one's
business. Westland is fortunate to have a
cadre of skilled law enforcement profes-
sionals dedicated to the public safety as is
Officer Furney. We congratulate Officer
Furney on a jobwell done,”Wild said.
Wayne will have a new mayor
after the upcoming election.
Current Mayor James Hawley
has chosen not to seek election to
the mayoral job and may be
resigning from his city council
post.
Hawley said that he and his
wife recently purchased a winter
home in Florida and that his
availability for meetings will be
limited as his plans move for-
ward. Hawley was appointed to a
council vacancy in 2012 and won
election to a four-year council
term in 2013. He was appointed
as mayor when Al Haidous
resigned to take a seat on the
Wayne County Commission in
2014.
Hawley said that the current
city manager form of government
in Wayne has been somewhat
frustrating for him as the mayor
has nomore authority than any of
the members of the council. He
noted that the authority to run
the city and "get things done" rests
with the citymanager in this form
of governmental structure.
According to the Wayne City
Charter, if Hawley does not seek
election as mayor, he could
return to his city council seat for
the remaining two years on that
term. He said that he will proba-
bly remain as a city council per-
son, but that the issue of availabil-
ity for meetings would also be an
issue if he opted to stay. He said
he would probably wait until the
end of the year before submitting
his resignation due to his plans to
winter inFlorida.
Hawley's announcement
reportedly prompted the interest
of Councilman Skip Monit,
Councilwoman Susan Rowe and
Bob Boerjte in seeking the may-
oral office.
The Romulus Public Library
has planned programs concern-
ing love, art and computers in
May.
The Second Monday Book

for discussion at 7 p.m. Monday
May 11.
That will be followed by a
presentation from the Detroit
Institute of Arts titled To Die
Upon a Kiss at 6:30 p.m. Monday,
May 18. Scientists have proven
that when experiencing love,
brain cells release dopamine, a
natural stimulant for many
regions of the brain that affect
human behavior. There will be a
selection of artworks that
explore the variety of behaviors
associatedwith love.
A computer class titled Kindle
for Beginners will take place
from9-11 a.m. Saturday, May 9.
Students can learn how to use
basic Kindle features, set up an
Amazon account and download
overdrive application onto
device. Participants must have a
Kindle and an active library
card.
A second computer class will
offer instruction on the overdrive
feature for e-books and Kindle.
Students will learn how to use
the overdrive download destina-
tion to download e-books to a
Kindle. A Kindle and active
library card and an active
Amazon account are required for
the class, scheduled for 9-11 a.m.
Saturday, May 23.
All programs are subject to
change. Register by visiting the
library or by phone (734) 942-
7589. Space is Limited.
Romulus Public Library is
located at 11121 Wayne Road in
Romulus.
Westland Ofc. Cale Furney accepts congratulations from Mayor William Wild on his
selection as Officer of the Year.
