District awards $1.18 million in repair contracts
Romulus Athletic Center to host charity event
Members of the Van Buren
Public Schools Board of Education
have approved more than $1.18
million in improvements to district
schools
The improvements are sched-
uled to be completed before classes
begin this fall.
During the March 10 regular
board meeting, Eric Dumont from
PlanteMoranCRESApresented an
overviewof building improvements
that are complete or nearly com-
plete funded by the 2013 Sinking
Fund. Dumont also discussed the
plans for building improvements
fundedby the 2014 SinkingFund.
The Sinking fund was approved
by voters in 2008 and provides from
$1.2 to $1.5 million annually to be
used for upgrades and repairs to
school buildings.
Board members approved four
contracts at the meeting including:
$559,845 contract to Fuller
Mechanical for the Owen
Intermediate School mechanical
system and controls upgrade;
$316,228 contract to DeMaria
Building Co. for the rebuilding of
eight lavatory rooms at Owen and

Allied Building Services for class-
room lighting fixture replacement
at Owen and McBride schools and
a $192,356 contract to Hewitt Co.,
Inc. for the replacement and glaz-
ing of glass at OwenSchool.
The board members spent some
time discussing the merits of each
bid and the use of local businesses
and union contractors but eventu-
ally awarded the contracts to the
lowest bidders.
Visitors to the Romulus Athletic
Center between noon and 8 p.m.
Saturday, March 29 will be able to
use the facilities at a reduced cost
andbenefit a local charity, too.
For a $10 admission fee, visitors
can enjoy swimming, basketball,
volleyball, rock climbing, fitness
classes, the hot tub andmuchmore
and half of the fee will be donated
to the Christy's Legacy of Hope
charity for orphaned children
around the world. Attendees must
mention Christy's Legacy of Hope
or display a flier for the event to
receive the special price.
“It's a unique fundraiser,” said
Karen DePriest, who founded the
charity to honor her late daughter
Christy LynnDePriestWright. “The
Romulus Athletic Center is an
amazing place and there are so
many fun activities. Everyone will
have a great time.”
The RAC, located at 35765
Northline Road at Wayne Road, is
billed as Michigan's premier recre-
ation facility for good reason. The
center has thousands of members
who visit for exercise, fun and spe-
cial events on a regular basis.
General Manager Andy McKay
said the RAC and its staff are “hon-
ored” to partner with Christy's
Legacy of Hope on the fundraising
day.
“I invite everyone to come out
and enjoy a day at the RAC to help
support a great organization that
does amazing work with orphaned
children throughout the world,”
McKay said. “Spend your day in a
healthy way with our five-pool
water park, basketball and volley-
ball gyms, climbing wall, fitness
facilities and indoor walking track -
and help Christy's amazing story
carry on.”
Before she died inMay 2010 of a
rare form of cancer, Christy spent
five weeks teaching English to
orphaned children in China. The
young Taylor woman fell in love
with her students and hoped one
day to return to China and care for
the orphaned children.
The non-profit charity continues
Christy's vision, passion and com-
mitment to orphans.
On the “day of fun,” many of the
activities will be available through-
out the entire eight hours, while
others have scheduled times.
Basketball courts will be available
from noon to 4 p.m. Volleyball
courts will be available from 4 to 8
p.m.
