Roger Arnold Maze
Roger Arnold Maze passed
away Feb. 15, 2018 unex-
pectedly in Phoenix, AZ at
the age of 79 following a
surgical procedure.
Born Aug. 21, 1938 to Bill
and Betty Maze, he was a
1956 graduate of Romulus
High School and captain of
the football team. He
earned the status of U.S.
Marine shortly after gradu-
ation.
He married Ruth Lucille
Bard, moved to South
Lyon, and had two sons,
William (Beth) and David
(Kristin). He enjoyed a vari-
ety of careers, including a
brief stint as a private
investigator. He settled on
the cutting edge of com-
puter science for Ford
Motor Co., providing an
endless supply of punch
cards in lieu of coloring
books for his children and
introducing computers to
the Flemish in Belgium dur-
ing the mid 70s.
Mr. Maze became national-
ly ranked in muzzle loading
black powder and still
maintains national records.
Eventually, he graduated to
Sharps long-range silhou-
ettes and shotgun. He also
enjoyed golf, loved life, and
did not want a funeral or for
anyone to mourn his loss.
He made friends easily,
and was a genuine friend
to many. In addition to his
wife and sons, he is sur-
vived by his older brother
Wes, and younger sisters
Myra and Carol, as well as
their children. He is also
survived by three grand-
children, Regan, Alissa,
and Trevor and two great-
grandchildren, Aaron and
Xandra.

Preparing students for real world
employment opportunities is themain goal
of Julia Salerno, the BusinessManagement
teacher at RomulusHighSchool.
Salerno manages a state of the art busi-
ness lab, equipped with 30 dual monitored
student stations. The lab also includes
three 65-inch touch screen smart boards
that allow students to present business
portfolios, and Salerno to deliver industry
standard instruction. Prior to joining the
Romulus teaching staff in 2000, Salerno
was employed in the accounting depart-
ment at FordMotor Co.
“The corporate world was no longer sat-
isfying to me. I felt like I could use my
knowledge to impact the lives of others,”
Salerno said. Since then she has built a
multi-layered business program at
Romulus High School that incorporates
classroom instruction, research, distance
learning, and a virtual simulation where
students take on the roll of a general man-
ager. Students who take the course and
complete each section can gain Microsoft
Office Certification in Word, Excel, and
PowerPoint by successfully completing an
examination. According to Tom Knight
from the Michigan Department of
Education, Microsoft has allowed school
districts to become testing sites through
their ImagineAcademy.
“The program is ever-evolving. Students
across the state who earn these certifica-
tions are developing industry standard
skills and are entering the workforce,” said
Knight. Under Salerno's guidance
Romulus High School became an Imagine
Academy in 2015. The Academy provides
free digital text, lesson plans and 500 cer-
tificate vouchers valued at $100 dollars
each, for staff and students to become
Microsoft certified.
Salerno said that since Romulus High
School has become a testing site, more stu-
dents are taking the test and are perform-
ing at amuchhigher rate.
Senior Kierra Ross, one of Salerno's stu-
dents said she sees great benefit in the pro-
gram.
“Learning how to manage numbers is a
big help if you want to be fiscally responsi-
ble in life. It is important to know how to
budget income and expenses,”Ross said.
Students who successfully complete
each section of the course with a letter
grade of a B or higher, can qualify for col-
lege credit withmanyMichigan colleges.
arrest.
“If the heart rate slows down
toomuch, we'd be able to increase
the rate and if the heart's going
too fast, we can slow it back down,
aswell,”Krause said.
The funds will be reimbursed
by the Beaumont Foundation,
which regularly purchases heart
monitors for municipalities in
their service area. The health sys-
tem has also funded monitors in
Wayne and Dearborn, among
other cities.
Members of the Romulus City
Council unanimously waived the
bid process last week in order to
purchase the monitors and get
them in service as quickly as pos-
sible.
“We're giving something to the
residents that they deserve. To
assist in saving a life is a wonder-
ful
thing,”
said
City
CouncilwomanVirginiaWilliams.

For nearly two decades,
Romulus residents have joined
their elected officials and
department heads for the
Annual CitywideCleanSweep.
The original effort was creat-
ed in 1999 by Mayor LeRoy D.
Burcroff while he was serving as
a city council member. He said it
was a way to encourage resi-
dents to take pride and owner-
ship in their community, and evi-
dently, hewas right.
Again this year, every city resi-
dent is invited to take part in the
event that draws individuals of
all ages along with school
groups, civic organizations and
local businesses. These volun-
teers swarm through the city
cleaning up and tidying public
places throughout the communi-
ty. They clean up litter and gen-
erally spruce up the public city
spaces.
There are no special qualifi-
cations, officials said, volunteers
only need to show up ready to
work at 9 a.m. April 21 at the
Romulus Senior Center, 36525
Bibbins St. in Romulus. The
clean-up takes place rain or
shine and participants will be
assigned to different locations
throughout the city.
While there is no need to reg-
ister, those volunteers in a group
of four or more who may have a
particular location in mind
where they would like to work
can call (734) 942-7571 to reserve
that location.
This year volunteers are
encouraged to participate in a
"before and after" clean-up proj-
ect with a chance to win prizes
for their hardwork.
The contest, sponsored by
Waste Management, includes
categories of: Romulus School,
Neighborhood or Community
Group and Romulus Business
Partner. Volunteers should send
photos of the before look of the
project and the appearance of
the area after their work to
by
Tuesday, April 24.

number listed above.
