A familiar name in Westland
has joined the crowded field
seeking to fill the term of former
Congressman JohnConyers.
Westland Mayor William R.
Wild is seeking to fill the seat left
vacant since Conyers announced
his retirement following sexual
harassment allegations in early
December.
In a prepared statement from
his campaign, Wild stated that
he felt he is well suited to repre-
sent the district inCongress.
“I believe my work ethic,
energy and proven track record
of getting things done are what
everyday families in the 13th
Congressional District need
now,” he is quoted in the state-
ment.
Wild, a graduate of John
Glenn High School and long-
time Westland resident, was
elected to his thirdmayoral term
last November. He was first
appointed to the position in 2007
and since then has managed the
10th largest city in the state with
about 85,000 residents. Prior to
becoming mayor, he served on
the
Westland
Planning
Commission from 1999-2001 and
served on the Westland City
Council from 2001-2007, includ-
ing two years as president.
Wild said that he has attract-
ed more than $200 million in
investment in the city business
district and managed the city
from a budget deficit to a $6 mil-
lion rainy-day fund while
increasing the city bond rating.
He also credits the creation of a
LGBTQ anti-discrimination poli-
cy in the city and his Wild About
Youth Works job program,
among a list of accomplish-
ments.
“For nearly two decades, I've
been bridging the gap between
the needs of our neighborhoods
and federal policies and dollars.
We can do better,”Wild said. “We
must keep Congress focused
squarely on the issues that mat-
ter, like rebuilding our infra-
structure, access to affordable
quality health care, excellent
schools for our kids and to good-
paying jobs and opportunities.”
Wild is among a widening
field of Congressional hopefuls
including state Rep. Rashida
Tlaib, a community organizer
and the first Muslim woman
elected to the Michigan
Legislature, who has indicated
she will seek the office along
with Conyers' son, John Conyers
III, and his great-nephew, state
Sen. Ian Conyers as well as state
Sen. Coleman Young III, Detroit
City Council President Brenda
Jones, state Rep. Sherry Gay-
Dagnogo, former state Rep.
Shanelle

and
Democratic activist Michael
