Canton Township officials said they hope
a new company can help bring in additional
revenue at the oldest municipal golf course
in the community.
The township board approved a five-year
contract last week with Virginia-based Billy
Casper Golf (BCG) to manage the Fellows
Creek Golf Course. The contract allows for
an additional five-year option with the com-
pany, as well as protections for the township
should they not liveup to expectations.
The course had beenmanaged by theDan
Ross family inCanton formore than 35 years.
The township first solicited bids and dis-
cussed the issue back inNovember.
“This has been a big decision for us,” said
TownshipSupervisor Phil LaJoy.
Under the contract, Canton will pay BCG
a base management fee of $7,500. They are
expected to submit-and meet-an annual
budget as well as perform additional mainte-
nance on the course, such as replacing the
irrigation system.
There is language in the contract that
would allow the township to terminate it as
early as 2014 if performance standards aren't
met. Under that option, BCG could retain the
contract by paying the township the differ-
ence between the forecasted revenue and
achieved revenue. Another protection in the
contract allows Canton to impose a non-per-
formance fee if budget and usage standards
aren'tmet.
“It would come in the form of a suspen-
sion of themanagement fee until the amount
is reached,” said Debbie Bilbrey-Honsowetz,
director of Canton's Leisure Services
Department.
New Trustee Steven Sneideman said that
was one of the concerns hehad.
“I just wanted to make sure that if the
budget was not met, there was a way out,” he
said. “In this contract, wehave that ability.”
Former Township Supervisor and current
TrusteeTomYack agreed.
“It's probably one of the most complete
contracts I've ever seen,” he said.
Billy Casper Golf has managed theHilltop
Golf Course-Plymouth Township's municipal
golf course-for more than a year now.
Plymouth Township Supervisor Richard
Reaume wrote a letter of recommendation
for the company, saying that the company has
brought in additional revenue and enhanced
the overall golfing experience for users.
“It has proven to be the proper direction
forHilltopGolf Course,” hewrote.
Canton resident Jim Aaron asked why the
township will continue to manage the
Pheasant Run Golf Course near the Summit
on the Park. Bilbrey-Honsowetz said the
township decided in November not to transi-
tion the management of both courses at the
same time.
The township was currently looking at
ways to reduce costs there, aswell, she said.

Foundation donation helps Fife & Drum Corps
The Plymouth Fife & Drum Corps will be
looking as good as they sound when they
travel to Connecticut this summer, represent-
ing the community at an international event.
Penny Joy, chair of the Plymouth
Community Foundation Advisory Committee
presented Fife & Drum Corps President
Gayl Parr with a $3,392 check which will be
used to purchase a new drummajor mace, a
musket, swords and many other much-need-
ed replacement parts for drums along with
new guard equipment for the corps. The
equipment and uniforms of the corps are his-
torically accurate to those worn by George
Washington's personal guard and therefore
very expensive to replace. Parr said.
“Our old equipment was starting to show
its age. Because of this grant, we will be able
to replace a lot of aging equipment all at the
same time instead of piece by piece over
many years. It will really have a great impact
on the appearance of the corps,” said Corps
Musical Director JimPredhomme.
“It's especially timely as this year we will
carry the name of Plymouth, Michigan to
Independence Hall in Philadelphia and to
the Deep River Ancient Muster in
Connecticut.”
The Deep River Ancient Muster is an
international event attracting fife and drum
corps worldwide. It's the largest fife and
drum gathering in the world, starting with a
tattoo to kick off the three- day event. Only
the best corps are invited to perform,
Predhomme said, “and the Plymouth corps
will be one of them. It's essential the corps
looks its best for this event.”
“I'm so grateful to the Community
Foundation of Plymouth. The support is
especially important as we don't receive
funding from the schools or government.
Plymouth Fife & Drum Corps is one of
Plymouth's jewels. The community is lucky to
have a world class Fife &DrumCorps to call
its own,” noted the corps Ways and Means
ChairmanLisaLiGreci.
Plymouth Fife & Drum Corps is an inter-
nationally renowned world class Fife &
DrumCorps made up of students ages 12 - 18
from Plymouth and surrounding communi-
ties. Practicing year round, members are
dedicated to preserving the ancient arts of
color guard, fifing and drumming through
live performances at parades, patriotic cele-
brations, and other civic events.
At the close of the performance season,
the corps members tour to historical land-
marks. For more information, visit

The Community Foundation of Plymouth
(CFP) is dedicated to building a permanent
endowment to enrich the quality of life in the
greater Plymouth area. Established in 2005,
the foundation has awarded nearly $150,000
in grants and scholarships that have benefit-
ed Plymouth area residents. The Community
Foundation of Plymouth is affiliated with the
