A group of volunteers is organ-
izing a spaghetti dinner to help
pay the funeral expenses of a 12-
year-old killed by a train in
Wayne.
Raymond Joseph Patton, 12,
died Nov. 23 when he tried to
cross the railroad tracks at Venoy
in Wayne while a train was
oncoming.
The boy, nicknamed Chew,
was buried from theHarry J. Will
Funeral Home in Wayne at cost.
About $1,500 has been raised
toward the $6,500 cost of the
funeral, according to Buddy
Shuh, a pastor at Merge
Community Church which meets
at Westland John Glenn High
School.
Shuh said he was sought out
by one of the boy's teachers seek-
ing help. The dinner will take
place from 5-6:30 p.m. Sunday,
Jan. 4 at theWestland Friendship
Center.
Shuh is the head of the
Michigan Tears Foundation
Chapter, which provides finan-
cial and other support to families
who have lost an infant. He
explained that parents often
aren't prepared for the funeral
expenses when they suddenly
lose a child.
“We will accept donations at
the door. We will have five or 10
baskets for a silent auction and a
50/50 raffle,” Shuh said. “What
we really need are food sponsors
sowe don't have to buy that.”
The City ofWestland is partici-
pating
through
the
Compassionate City Initiative
and has donated the use of the
Friendship Center, Shuh said.
Volunteers helping with the
fundraiser are from Shuh's
church and the Wayne-Westland
schools.
Patton would have celebrated
his 13th birthday Dec. 28. He is
survived by his parents
Margarete Turner and Raymond
R. Patton and siblings, Raymona,
Lovey, Derek, Lonnie, Kyle,
Sabrina and Raymond James, all
ofNorWayne.

donate, contact Shuh at bud-

Each year, Christmas trees fill homes
with light and joy throughout themonth of
December. But after the holidays, they
don't have much use. How about giving
your real Christmas tree a second life by
recycling it into a beneficial resource at
no charge to you?
Have yours picked up by the city and
recycled for use at the Westland
CommunityGarden and other locations.
The Westland Building and Planning
Department of Public Service will offer a
Christmas Tree Recycling Program Jan. 5
through Jan. 17. Space will be provided
for residents to drop off live Christmas
trees at the City of Westland Recycling
Center located at the rear of the
Department of Public Services building
located at 37137Marquette.
Trees can be dropped off during regu-
lar business operation hours 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Monday-Saturday. The facility is closed
Sundays. Trees must be free of lights, tin-
sel and other decorations. Only real
Christmas trees canbe recycled.
During these dates, trees can be placed
at the curb for pick up at no charge. Trees
picked up at the curbwill go to the landfill
andwill not be recycled.
Due to the warmer weather and lack of
snowfall, many residents still have leaves
that they have raked and bagged. Leaves
will also be pickedup Jan. 5-17 at the curb.
For more information, contact the
Department of Building and Planning,
(734) 467-3210.
Final guest
Senator Glenn S. Anderson, left, invited Father Gerard Bechard to offer the invo-
cation for the opening of State Senate Session on Dec. 17. It is a tradition in the
State Senate for legislators to invite local religious leaders from their respective
districts to lead the Senate in prayer and begin the day's session. Fr. Gerry, of
Sts. Simon and Jude Catholic Church in Westland joined Anderson to offer the
invocation. This marks the second time he has offered the invocation in the
Michigan Senate at Anderson's request and is the last invocator Anderson will be
inviting due to term limits. Fr. Gerry has been the Senior Pastor at Ss. Simon and
Jude Catholic Church since 1989 and has been in the priesthood for 34 years.
Anderson introduced Fr. Gerry to Lt. Gov Brian Calley after the invocation.
